General Info

Yellow River Restaurant 何處覓小食 sits comfortably at 9600 Bellaire Blvd STE 121, Houston, TX 77036, right in the heart of a busy dining strip that’s known for solid Chinese food. Walking in, the vibe feels relaxed and familiar, the kind of place where regulars know exactly what they’re ordering and newcomers are quickly pulled in by the aromas drifting from the kitchen.

One of the first things that stands out is the salad bar, which adds a refreshing contrast to the warm, comforting dishes coming out of the kitchen. It’s not something you see at every Chinese restaurant, and it gives diners the freedom to balance richer flavors with lighter bites. The tofu cucumber salad is especially memorable-cool, clean, and quietly flavorful, it works perfectly as a starter or a palate reset between dishes.

The menu leans into crowd-pleasing classics, and the orange chicken easily earns its reputation as a highlight dish. It’s crisp without being heavy, coated in a sauce that hits that sweet-and-savory note without overpowering the chicken itself. Another comforting favorite is the pot roast, slow-cooked until tender and deeply seasoned, making it a satisfying choice for lunch or a casual dinner.

Service options are straightforward and convenient. Takeaway is available, which makes this spot an easy go-to when you want reliable Chinese food without committing to a long sit-down meal. If you do choose to dine in, the restaurant offers wheelchair-accessible seating, keeping the space welcoming and practical for all guests. There’s also a toilet on-site, which adds to the overall comfort, especially for longer visits.

Drinks are another quiet strength here. The great tea selection pairs naturally with the food, cutting through richer flavors and rounding out the meal in a way that feels thoughtful rather than rushed. It’s the kind of detail that regulars appreciate and reviews often mention when talking about the overall dining experience.

As a lunch destination, the restaurant works especially well. Portions feel satisfying without being overwhelming, and the menu flows easily whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or settling in with friends. Across its food, services, and atmosphere, Yellow River Restaurant 何處覓小食 delivers a grounded, dependable experience that fits seamlessly into Houston’s diverse Chinese dining scene.

What customers say?

“ Decided to pop in for a quick lunch and was really surprised by this place! The vibe inside is quite relaxed with several tables and booths, nothing too fancy or complex. The people here were very friendly, the food had variety and it was a very attractive price ~$8 for a bento box (2 meat & 2 veg). Personally, I was not much a fan of the tofu’s flavor but everything else in my box was enjoyable. Highly recommend anyone looking for a clean and affordable meal to stop by and enjoy Yellow River. ”

“ One of the best places in Houston Chinatown town for a quick meal. The variety is great, food tastes good, I've been eating here occasionally for almost 20 years. Great pricing, 8 dollars for 2 meat and 2 vegetables tray. They also offer other dishes to order to go. And drinks. Faily reliable and clean. ”

“ Clean, comfortable, simple place located at the far north end of the very boring Dynasty Mall. I had the $8.00 combo for lunch, which is rice plus your choice of two veggies and two meats. Friendly fast service. The food is okay, but if you're coming to China Town for a culinary experience, this is not the place. Atmosphere is classic shopping mall. There are better options in much more interesting malls just a few hundred feet further down Bellaire Blvd. ”

“ This is one of those unassuming hole in the wall restaurants that's really a hidden gem in the region. This place aims to recreate the look, feel, and taste of a Chinese high school cafeteria. $8 and you get rice + your choice of two meats and two veggie dishes. The food here is actually pretty darn good to me, some may feel it's bland but to me it's more subtle and natural tasting. I think it's best to go right around noon/lunchtime if you want peak freshness. ”

“ First time coming here! It's nice getting my exposed to the local Chinese restaurant and delicious foods! My friend introduced me this place and it was a great choice for us to be here! Service is good and the generous portion for the price! $7.50 for rice and 4 side dishes of your choice! I enjoyed my vegetarian meal a lot! I like the local cafeteria vibe! When I come to this area, I'll be back again! :) Come and enjoy the meal! Cheers ”

“ This restaurant is one of the oldest established in Houston's Chinatown. Although many customers claim the flavor has changed throughout the years due to ownership changes, $8 for a four-item self-pick bento box is not bad. The Danzai noodles are also $8. The food and environment are fresh, and there are many choices if you come in early enough. The only problem is that the flavor is a little bland, in my opinion. I recommend this restaurant for people who want some Taiwanese style lunch. ”

“ Ordered their bento box and upgraded to purple rice. Total of 8 dollars or 7.5 for white rice as of Dec, 2023. Would recommend the steam egg, tofu, the beef with carrots and radish, and braised chicken. Very nice for the price. Will come back! ”
